Kingsbridge Primary School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School.  We have currently successfully achieved the Rights Respecting Schools Bronze Award and are working towards the Silver Award. We are working with UNICEF UK and are dedicated to creating a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award helps ensure these values are embedded in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

​What does it mean to be a rights respecting school?

​​Together young people and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting them into practice every day. This can be seen in class, assemblies and during the children’s playtimes. The Award is not just about what children do but also, importantly, what adults do. In Rights Respecting Schools, children’s rights are promoted and realised, adults and children work towards this goal together. The Award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school community and beyond.

The children’s rights are the basis of all UNICEF’s work and come from The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It is the most complete statement of children’s rights ever produced and is the most widely-ratified international human rights treaty in history.

​The Steering Group

The steering group is a group of pupils and adults from across the school community who lead the schools’ Rights Respecting work. This group is representative of the whole school community also involving the senior management team (SMT) and the governing body. The group meets regularly in order to take the lead in developing and delivering the school’s Rights Respecting action plan.

The groups focus is:

• To ensure that the whole school is aware of the Rights Respecting Schools Award.
• To provide a link between children and young people, teachers, senior management team, governors and the whole school community.
• To regularly feed back to the school community about progress, including to the SMT, governors, staff and parents.
• To prepare for the assessment by collating evidence and being able to meet with the assessor(s).
